Case Studies

A DN75 cast iron water main was blocked up to 95% over 180m/590ft. Difficult access on built-up ground with multiple services crossing & adjacent, with 60m/196ft under the M56 motorway. Cleaned with Super Midi in one day.

Queensferry Water Main

United Kingdom, 2019

Rehabilitated several cooling pipes for 4 power plant turbines by cleaning with Mini Miller and then Picote Brush Coating™ them. Pipe diameters ranged from DN50-100 / 2-4". This method was ideal for small bends and the large number of junctions.

Water Treatment Plant

Indonesia, 2018

Due to the location of the DN75 potable water supply at NASA campus, excavation would have been very costly & challenging. High-speed cleaning with the Maxi Miller, followed by Picote Brush Coating™ provided a fast and easy renovation.

MEGA PLANS

The Picote MEGA Miller has been under development and under wraps for the last two years. The prototype was unveiled at the International Society for Trenchless Technology (ISTT) Show in Helsinki, Finland in October 2022 and afterwards at the Picote Open House, a short 45 minute ride away. The Aqua MEGA Miller was towed there in style, by the Picote Aqua Hummer!
Development of the MEGA Miller and tooling is ongoing, to enable contractors to reach further and perform challenging works quickly and more efficiently with huge power upgrades and capabilities.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Picote Aqua

  • What is the difference between traditional cleaning methods and Picote High-Speed Cleaning?
Traditional rack boring machines rotate at a maximum RPM of 250, whereas Picote High-Speed Millers start at 500 RPM and go up to 1500 RPM. This allows us to use a range of stainless steel chains, grinding panels and other tools (drill heads).
  • What pipe diameters do the Aqua Millers operate inside?
Depending on model of machine, 75mm (3") up to DN300 (12").
  • What distance can you clean at one time with Picote Aqua Millers?
It depends on the model of Miller. With a single access point the maximum would be 49m / 160ft (each way from point of access).
  • What diameter are the shafts on Picote Aqua Millers?
    We currently have three sizes of shaft for Picote Aqua Millers, depending on the model. - 10mm / 3/8" - 12mm / 1/2" - 18mm / 3/4"
  • How far can I clean in one day?
Productivity varies depending on shaft length, pipe diameter and the amount of tuberculate in the pipe. We offer a range of tools, selection is again dependent on the level of tuberculation inside the pipe.
  • What access points do I need?
To gain access you have to remove one or more of the following: valves, t-connections, or, depending on service connection, there could be access through that way.
  • Does using Picote Aqua Millers and Tooling damage the pipe?
Picote Millers and associated tooling have been widely used in wastewater pipes globally over the last 10 years on a range of pipe materials including PVC, clay, pitch fibre, steel, cast iron etc. without causing damage (providing that the correct tool is used). Due to the high rotation speed creating a centrifugal force, the Cyclone Chains and Smart Cutter™ are centralised, minimising risk further.
  • Do Picote Aqua Millers have a large worksite footprint?
No! The worksite footprint of the Millers is relatively small: 1m x1.5m / 3.2ft x 4.9ft maximum with a generator mounted in a vehicle - a standard 3.5T panel van would be sufficient.
  • Do the machines and tools damage or displace ferrule connections?
Generally, this is not an issue as we are not dragging anything through the pipe and the tools we use won't get caught on the intruding ferrules, unlike for example, drag scraping.
